This article discusses resistance movements carried out by residents of the Morro da Providência, Rocinha and Morro dos Prazeres favelas, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Such actions have intensified during the last decade in reaction to the deepening of the inherent contradictions in capitalism, as authoritarian management of social conflicts have intensified in the city in defense of the neoliberal offensive, to increase capital’s profitability, in order to contain disputes and control the use of urban space. The empirical references utilized are derived mainly from the dialogue between activists and favela scholars working on research proposals and university extension programs, and who are accompanying the struggle for the realization of the right to the city for the poorest segments of the population. This approach led to a diversity o f sources and methods used to collect the necessary information.
