The community of Laboriaux, at the very highest section of Rocinha, has been one of the many communities found in the cross hairs of the city wide removals. Though Laboriaux has found itself in this precarious situation residents have seemingly left the process to handle itself. The city has not been open and forthright with Laboriaux’s status and future, leaving residents only to speculate on the future of their own community. Concerns are emerging from community leaders that residents feel the worst has come and gone, and the community is now in the clear. This has resulted in Laboriaux residents not attending important meetings as many feel the issue has past. Thus Laboriaux has been left out of the conversation when it comes to removals. But residents took a big step in changing this during the Investigatory Mission’s visit to Rio de Janeiro, last week. Residents presented an official report to the mission, explaining to them what is going on in Laboriaux, and with the re-inserted themselves into the conversation. The document was created by community leaders, with the technical assistance of Mundo Real.
